Beginnings…

I have just finished reading an insightful new book by Courtney E. Martin, “Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters, the Frightening New Normality of Hating Your Body.”   Courtney laments the fact that many young women, raised by feminists who told them they could be anything,  have misinterpreted the power messages and are now obsessed with becoming everything…successful, thin and pretty. Self hatred has almost become a rite of passage for many teenagers.

Courtney challenges readers to “step through the looking glass” and create new stories. She emphasises that no one story describes our healing as women, but rather that there are a series of moments when the light is let in.

There is no healing without help.

There is no power as potent as possibility.

There is no transformation without truth.

There is no change without vulnerability.

There is no wisdom greater than that found inside you.

There is no beauty without struggle or aberration.

There is no statement like your life. There is no end.

There are only beginnings. “

enlighten aims to be just one more beginning of a series of amazing, brave, wild adventures into self acceptance, and indeed self-love, for many girls. Wow. We love this role. 🙂

Let me now pose a challenge to you all  – what is one small step you will make this week to end the culture of self hatred and help create a new beginning for yourself as a women?

Today…. I sent the bathroom scales to my fathers house. They no longer live in my bathroom where I have been staring at them for months thinking “I have to get on them – I have to loose weight – I am not good enough” It is all crap!

I am beautiful as I am. I am a wonderful woman who is just right the way she is!

I watched the video on the pro ana You Tube sites. It makes my skin crawl. When are we going to take responsibilty for looking after our beautiful girls? We cannot stand by and watch them kill themselves.

I also watched the Jill Killbourne video a while back. I loved it and suggest we should all look at this. It was worth the down load time. It was wonderful to hear a woman talk with such passion and knowledge. Its also funny too. Who knew!! I like her succinct view and advertisment evidence, arguing that by making women in advertising smaller, thinner, silenced, objectified, ideal and innocence (among others) – it wounds us all. Wonderful stuff.

Thanks for the access to these great resources. Wonderful to have it all at hand.

  2. Janey you my darling are a Goddess! YES, you are beautiful. 🙂 I was reading American artist Stark this week:
“The tiniest story in your life can deeply touch another. You cannot know the effect your story might have.”
Thank you for being brave enough to share this story about one of your “beginnings”.
